My Next Move is an easy-to-use electronic tool that enables users to explore occupations and 

find related information, including job openings, job outlook information, salaries, apprenticeships, and other related education and training programs.

• My Next Move uses information developed as part of the Occupational Information Network (O*NET) system. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, O*NET is a comprehensive career information resource that collects data including the knowledge, skills, and abilities required by more than 900 occupations in the U.S. economy.
• Through this new electronic tool, users can search for careers using keywords, industries, or their work-related interests. They can also can identify occupations in the green economy.
• The tool is written at a reading level that makes it accessible to everyone and is great for those who may be unfamiliar with computers and Internet sites.
• The tool includes a new online, streamlined interest assessment with 60 questions about what an individual likes to do. Based on an individual’s interests and responses, the information gathered will be used to suggest potentially suitable occupations and careers.

• My Next Move can be used by almost everybody and is available free online at www.mynextmove.org. It was especially designed for students, young people, and others new to the workforce.
• The tool can also be accessed nationwide at One-Stop Career Centers, educational institutions, industry, and state employment services.

• The O*NET system is the only comprehensive source of information on the knowledge, skills, abilities, work tasks, tools, technology, and other important requirements needed to perform work for occupations covering the entire U.S. economy. The O*NET Interest Profiler looks at several types of occupational interests and, based on the person’s answers, selects jobs that are a good match for what the person says they are interested in doing as their job, their likes and dislikes… So what is the big idea for using this tool?

Here is the overall big-picture idea:

If a person is really interested in doing a particular type of work, then... The person will probably like the work, and because they are interested in it and like it, they will probably be good at it, and because they are good at it, they will be successful in the job, and because they are successful, they will likely make a good living at work and be happy and satisfied.

The O*NET Interest Profiler is available in a paper and pencil version, a computerized version, and a shorter web-based version. These alternative delivery modes increase the flexibility that programs and clients have in career exploration.

This instrument is a self-assessment and career exploration tool that can help people discover the types of work activities and occupations that they would like and find exciting. Users identify and learn about broad-interest areas most relevant to themselves. The instrument is composed of 180 items describing work activities that represent a wide variety of occupations, as well as a broad range of training levels. People can use their interest results to explore the world of work. The O*NET Interest Profiler is also available in a paper and pencil version. This site gives very detailed and up-to-date information on over 800 jobs!! It was developed in a cooperation between the University of Virginia and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

At this website, the client can select to take the profile assessment of their occupational interest. It is free, takes about 10 minutes, has plain language questions, and results in a list of occupations that would suit the client (who takes the assessment) based on their answers, comparing their answers to thousands of other workers in occupations who say they are satisfied and happy doing their jobs….so if they are happy, and they answered the assessment questions like your client did, chances are real good that your client would similarly be satisfied in that job, and if they are working at something they are interested in, they will probably do well, be successful, make money, and be happy….and also the client gets a big dose of hope for their future as well as the feeling of importance that comes from you helping them identify occupational opportunities for them!
